Among the different fascinating forms of art, dance has always been popular in India. Indian dance originated in form of classical dances. Even within the category of classical dance, numbers of different types of dances are present. As we are going to talk about Bharatnatyam, it is surely one of the most popular classical Indian dances. It is said to be originated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. The birth of Bharatnatyam goes back to almost 2,000 years. According to the belief, this dance form was revealed by Lord Brahma to a famous sage named Bharata who then codified this sacred dance in a Sanskrit text called the Natya Shastra. The said text is supposed to be fundamental treatise on Indian drama and aesthetics.
According to Natya Shastra, dance is segregated into two distinct forms of nritta, and nritya. The former one refers to focus on mastery of conceptual hand gestures and movements, whereas nritya is about dancers employing an intricate system of body language and hand signals to illustrate emotional expressions.
Talking about Bharatnatyam, its origin is credited to the Hindu temples of South India where the Devadasis or temple dancers used to perform it. It was a symbol of religious devotion and it flourished under royal patronage. The Devadasi system was an integral part of South Indian temple ritual but with the passage of time, this system faded away. Rukmini Devi revived and popularised the Bharatnatyam in its present form. However, the queen of Bharatnatyam sobriquet is given to Bala Saraswati who made this dance form a part of everyday human life. Bharatnatyam went through several phases of evolution and the present day form was enhanced by Poniah Pillai of Tanjore and his brothers. There are different formats of Bharatnatyam like Alarippu, Jathi Swaram, Shabdam, Javalis, Padams, Varnam and Padams.
