Have you ever wondered what the reason is for you not being able to get a call for a job interview, forget about not being able to clear an interview? One of the prime reasons for this could be an unimposing resume. With over a 1000 Resumes hitting the employer for a single vacancy, your resume should be able to clasp an employer’s attention within 5 seconds of a glance. No employer has the time to go over an extremely detailed resume. At the best what you need to ensure is that the Resume is kept brief, up to date and focusing on your skills, achievements, work experience and education. The most excellent way to make such a resume is to follow some simple tips given below –
What is the purpose of the resume?
Before you start penning down you resume, ensure you are aware of the reason why it is being written. You may be saleable for several skills of yours. Not every skill may fit in every job that you are applying for. Therefore ensure that the real and sole idea for making this resume is clear to you so that the resume does not become long and boring.
Make Use of titles and Headings matching the job requirements.
To avoid getting into the bin at the first glance by the employer, ensure that you use related tiles, skills, experience and education that best describe your traits for the job you are applying for. Instead of using terms like “Administrative”, make use of words like “Computerized Accounting Applications”. This will make your resume more powerful.
Highlight your achievements instead of your responsibilities.
A common mistake that most of the job aspirants do is to detail a list of plain boring responsibilities instead of highlighting their professional achievements. This make the job aspirant look more like a job hunter.
Most important information needs to be structured first.
Do not put the most important part of your resume towards the end. Ensure that’s the first thing you want the employer to concentrate. This is applicable to all the sections of your resume, personal and professional. Usually, the past work experience, skills as related to the job being applied for are the most important parts of the resume.
Remove older irrelevant work experiences
If you have worked for more than 15-20 years, you do not need to mention all unrelated experiences in your resume that would make the resume look plain boring. Only include the most recent and relevant experience.
Hit on the responsibilities and problems of the employer.
Try and understand the hidden problem of the problem by going through the responsibilities of the job. Try and sell the benefit of your skills by appropriately linking them to the duties and responsibilities of the job being applied for.
Lastly, Focus on Basics
Do not forget your basics, your name should be the first thing on your resume in bold. Your contact details should be clearly mentioned. On the other hand things like, hobbies, pictures, colors, designs, jargons or slangs are not required. Do not go over 1 or 2 pages, proof read or if possible make someone go over your resume to ensure there are no mistakes. And lastly, no lies please!
