India is truly an amazing country. India has made significant contributions to the world civilization. Name any field in any era and you will find some of the greatest discoveries and inventions made in this land. The country has always been at the forefront of culture, heritage, art and science. There are several interesting facts about India that gives us every reason to be proud of our country.

To begin with, the Indus valley civilization was known to be one of the most advanced civilizations. It gave birth to concepts like water harvesting, town planning etc that still hold significance even after thousands of years. These concepts provided new directions to world. India was also famous for its immeasurable wealth and that’s why it always attracted invaders from far flung regions. From Mongolian invaders to British, India always fascinated other nations for its wealth.

It is also believed that slavery did not exist in ancient India. That fact definitely speaks volume about India’s culture and its tradition of according respect to the humans irrespective of their class, creed and colour. India is also the birth place of the number system. We all know how number system has contributed to the growth and development of human civilization. Another great Indian talent, Bhaskaracharya who was man of famous repute in the field of astronomy and mathematics, takes the credit for being the first person to calculate the time taken by the earth to orbit the sun. Budhayana was the first person to explain the concept of Pythagoras theorem. He also made the task of calculation easier by becoming the first person to calculate the value of pie. Calculus, Algebra and trigonometry all came from India.

India’s contribution is not just restricted to science and astronomy. Sushruta was a great physician during ancient India and the history books says, he conducted complicated surgeries like caesareans, brain surgery, stones, fractures, cataract, artificial limbs and plastic surgery. The earliest school of medicine was Ayurveda and that again took birth in the great land of India. It was developed by Charaka.

Medicinal System of India

These discoveries were based upon observational power, trials and patient study over a period of thousands of years. Before allopath became the most favoured mode of treatment in the country, ancient methods ruled.

The most famous medicinal systems in India are Ayurveda and Homeopathy. The former one has its roots in Hindu scriptures Vedas which is also the earliest documents and principal foundation of Indian intelligence and awareness. Ayurveda developed cure for all the ailments. In last few decades, it has made its comeback with a vengeance. As people are trying to go back to their roots, Ayurveda is more appropriately understood by the people today. However, in the medieval times, when Ayurveda was the established medicinal system, a number of other medicine systems also flourished in the country. Credit for that phenomenon goes to influence of diverse cultures. Accepting all the cultures with open arms led to a wonderful combination of healing mechanisms. Other medicinal systems are, Homeopathy, Naturopathy, Herbal therapy, Siddha system and Unani system.
