Rishikesh – Uttarakhand

Rishikesh is one of the most popular pilgrim centers in India. The name Rishikesh is placed after Rishi Raibhya is believed to have undergone penance to please God who appeared as Hrishikesh. Millions of tourists from all around the world come here every year hoping to absolve their sins by bathing in the holy Ganga. Rishikesh is a now a center for peace, meditation and renunciation.

Rishikesh is well known for several religious retreats. Ancient practices and approaches are used here to de-stress tourists and use meditation to calm their souls. Rishikesh is gateway to the Himalayan shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

Located at an altitude of 356 meters, Rishikesh is also known for its scenic beauty. The maximum summer temperature is 44.4 degree Celsius and minimum is 29 degree Celsius; while the maximum winter temperature is 32.2degree Celsius and minimum is 18.3 degree Celsius. Rishikesh has developed into a known center for schools of yoga and meditation.

Triveni Ghat- It is the main place in the town area where most of the pilgrims take their holy dip.

Bharat Mandir- Located on the banks of the Ganges, this was built by Adiguru Shankra Chrya arround the 12th century. The temple contains the idol of Lord Vishnu which is carved out of a single stone.

Geeta Bhawan- This is one of the oldest temple complexes in the area. The famous Indian epic Ramayana and Mahabharta are described on the walls of the place.

Rishikund- A kund means a water body. Rishikund is one of the most ancient places and records suggest that the place was blessed by Goddess Yamuna.
